Motorola and FAST Combine Resources on Restaurant Networking Technology

Real-Time Store Monitoring Now Available Around the Clock

MANSFIELD, Mass. and STRATFORD, Conn., April 12, 2001 -- Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Food Automation - Service Techniques, Inc. (FAST), have formed a new business relationship for delivering a fully integrated, enterprise-level networking solution for the restaurant industry.

Combining FAST’s Smart Commercial Kitchen®, or SCK®, technologies with Motorola’s multi-service products will dramatically streamline operations in the restaurant industry by helping to reduce labor demands and increase efficiency.

Motorola’s Multiservice Networks Division (MND), a leader in smart access solutions, and FAST, a pioneer in the emerging market of restaurant equipment and systems networking, have been working closely together since May 2000 to deploy a combination of wired and wireless smart appliance technologies in the restaurant industry. Today’s announcement empowers FAST to deliver a bundled set of networking communications products to its customers in conjunction with Motorola MND, including fully managed, secure around-the-clock networking services, such as on-line monitoring, control, and maintenance.

SCK is a division of privately-held FAST. Based in Stratford, Conn., FAST is committed to open networking standards in the foodservice industry. As a pioneer and leader in process control technologies designed exclusively for the foodservice industry, FAST is the only supplier of on-line kitchen networking products, available in wireless or wireline platforms. SCK products are designed specifically to be interoperable with other restaurant information systems and equipment (point-of-sale, back office, and building and energy management systems).

SCK changes the management of restaurants worldwide by bringing key equipment and systems on-line to monitor their performance, automate labor-intensive steps, and track food safety levels as described under federal, state, and local guidelines, generally referred to as HACCP compliance. It is currently the only appliance networking solution designed exclusively for the commercial kitchen. SCK technologies allow operators to communicate with single or multiple appliances in the restaurant, through wireless or wireline platforms.

The combination of Motorola’s embedded DigitalDNA™, multiservice networking solutions and FAST’s SCK networking technologies brings to the foodservice marketplace new opportunities for operational excellence and food safety enhancements across entire restaurant brands. The FAST/Motorola offering includes a unique menu of networking solutions for a cost-effective, scalable migration path to a smarter, on-line kitchen.

"The uniting of FAST’s recognized leadership in foodservice technology with MND’s chain retail success and proven networking expertise represents a significant opportunity in the nearly $400 billion restaurant marketplace," said Ben Koether, FAST, Inc. chairman and chief executive officer. "Our proactively managed on-line kitchen network delivers scalable connectivity at the store level, offering data, voice, and video services that improve the manager’s effectiveness to service the brand’s consumers."

"Motorola is committed to delivering complete, end-to-end networking solutions to a broad range of industries," added Rick Lane, president and general manager of Motorola MND. "We are pleased to work with FAST to bring a powerful solutions offering to the foodservice industry, and help restaurants better manage their business operations."
